The Vision...
A Safer and Friendlier Park
BLUFF PARK PROMENADE
and Sculpture Garden
Public Art Sculptures A longer-term vision, still in early research and development, will be introduced to the community when a plan is fully developed. This project places a number of public art sculptures in the park. A renowned sculpture collection (about the scale of the existing Lone Sailor sculpture), will be placed intermittently along the grass without any fencing (see image above). The art pieces will be spaced apart, so to leave the grass area mostly open. This vision is years away, and won’t be ready to initiate until the present project is completed.
The public art will be sought from private collections and corporate resources, and no City funds will be used. Selection of the art will be juried by a committee of experienced art curators.
What’s good about such a sculpture collection is that while renowned and celebrated, it’s not a big draw for crowds. This will elevate the Bluff Park brand, with no burden on the community. For example, traffic and parking for the Long Beach Museum of Art has little affect on the Bluff Park community. Also, the world renowned UCLA Sculpture Garden, while free to the public, remains mostly empty of visitors.
Unlike the bay-facing Lone Sailor statue, these sculptures will face the 40,000 daily commuters going by. This world renowned public art collection will also do much for the Long Beach Brand.
